Panic attacks are periods of intense anxiety, fear, and physical discomfort which strike suddenly and often unexpectedly. Panic attacks are often very different from other anxiety related problems, due to their rapid onset and sometimes completely debilitating effects.

About 3 million people in the United States alone have suffered from panic attacks, and they can strike in any age group. Some people are unaware of what is happening to them, and even fear that they are losing their mind, having a heart attack, or dying.

People who don’t know what a panic attack is, and do not realize they are experiencing one, may therefore fail to get proper treatment for their panic attacks due to lack of awareness. Panic attacks will not typically stop unless they are treated.

Panic attacks can cause a multitude of problems, and tend to get progressively worse if not treated. While symptoms vary with each person, some of the most common components of a panic attack include: Sudden onset of unexpected fear and panic, cold sweat, heart palpitations, inability to breathe, dizziness, feeling faint, and physical discomfort or pain.

Because the experience of a panic attack is so intensely miserable, it is actually common for people to fear new panic attacks so much that the attacks intensify and become more frequent. Prompt and efficient treatment of panic attacks is required if a person wants to eliminate these attacks and move on with their life.

While some patients are given prescription medication to help control their panic attacks, the medications in this group have some very unpleasant side effects of their own, including constant drowsiness, total disorientation, and exhaustion. It is often said that with these medications, the cure is nearly as bad as the disease! Fortunately, there is effective help available for panic attacks that can even eliminate them completely.

The best way to handle panic attacks is to use a proven program which is based in the more advanced cognitive techniques of modern psychology. Programs such as Panic Away help stop and treat panic attacks at their root: The important thing is to eliminate the fear of future attacks and take control of your life back. Panic Away doesn’t use any drugs or dangerous methods: The program techniques are based in many years of proven psychological research and use methods which allow you to stop fearing and start living again. The patented One Move method is something you can immediately do yourself and experience excellent results from.

Panic attacks are not a problem which will ever improve if they just have a bandage put on them: They need a real cure. Following a psychologically sound program like the one referenced above can help you achieve the cure for panic attacks.

Panic / Anxiety Attacks are a serious condition and they typically grow more serious over time. Panic attacks will often leave those who suffer from them feeling as if a thousand pound weight is crushing their chest, or as if they are having a heart attack.

A person suffering a panic attack will frequently experience profound physical discomfort and even pain. Being unable to get air will typically make the lungs burn in pain, and the abdominal discomfort can be severe enough to feel like being repeatedly punched.

While the physical symptoms are painful and completely miserable, the psychological ones can be even worse. Feelings of impending doom, thinking death is imminent, or that a psychotic break is happening are all too common for those who suffer panic attacks.

Most people who suffer from panic attacks say that they would go to nearly any length to avoid having the attacks happen, but they simply do not know how to prevent them. Panic attacks may not cause major long term physical damage, but the mental and emotional damage can be quite severe. It is actually quite common for the physical effects of panic attacks to be so severe that patients will end up in hospital emergency rooms or at urgent care centers, fearing they are going into cardiac arrest, having a severe asthma attack, or having a nervous breakdown.

Some doctors actually tell panic attack patients “it’s all in your head, nothing serious” in a dismissive manner and end up making the patient feel truly hopeless. Panic attacks are a very serious medical problem and they need to be regarded as such.

Unlike other medical problems, such as an easily treated virus or illness, panic attacks require an approach that treats the problem, and prevents it from continually occurring. Panic attacks need to be not just managed, but prevented.

Panic attacks are a medical problem that can be quite serious and accelerate until they are nearly out of control, so it is important that patients and doctors alike treat them that way. Programs such as Panic Away prevent panic attacks.

Since this program’s primary aim is to retrain the brain so that it is not allowing the “fight or flight” response to occur at all the wrong times, Panic Away can not just teach you how to deal with panic attacks when they happen, but to stop them from plaguing you ever again.

Anxiety is a psychological and physiological state characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components. Anxiety is a generalized mood condition that occurs without an identifiable triggering stimulus. Anxiety is an emotional state, which combines unpleasant thoughts and feelings of fear or worry with bodily changes such as tension and changes in blood flow.

Anxiety disorder is NOT a mental illness, it is a behavioral condition, and there is a very BIG difference. Anxiety can be either a short term “state” or a long term “trait. Additionally, fear is related to the specific behaviors of escape and avoidance, whereas anxiety is the result of threats that are perceived to be uncontrollable or unavoidable. When anxiety becomes excessive, it may fall under the classification of an anxiety disorder. Someone suffering from anxiety might also experience it as a sense of dread or panic. Although every anxiety sufferer does not experience panic attacks, they are a common symptom.

Because test anxiety hinges on fear of negative evaluation, debate exists as to whether test anxiety is itself a unique anxiety disorder or whether it is a specific type of social phobia. Anxiety attacks and disorders: Guide to the signs, symptoms, and treatment options. Anxiety disorder does not require any medicinal intervention, which is why psychologists have been treating anxiety disorders with psychotherapy for decades; it just falls short of providing complete solution. So, if anxiety disorder isn’t a mental illness, what can be done to correct it?

Anxiety disorder affects about 15% of the American population, according to studies conducted at the Harvard Medical School. An anxiety disorder is likely present when anxiety continues beyond the time frame of the stressful event or situation. But when anxiety increases to the point of interfering with day-to-day functioning causing dread over everyday situations, anxiety has become a disabling disorder. The individual using alcohol or drugs to make stressful situations more bearable is at risk for addiction at which point there is more than one disorder to deal with. It is important that any physical or mental illness be treated before a person will respond to treatment for the anxiety disorder. Effective therapies for anxiety disorders are available, and research is uncovering new treatments that can help most people with anxiety disorders lead productive, fulfilling lives.

Panic

Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by repeated and unexpected episodes of intense fear accompanied with sometimes-severe physical symptoms. Panic attacks usually come without warning, and although the fear is generally irrational, the perception of danger is very real.

Panic attacks may be confused with heart attacks. A person experiencing a panic attack will often feel as if he or she is about to die or pass out. Sometimes the response is so extreme that no more than a disturbing thought causes marked feelings of anxiety, and in the worst cases a stimulus so insignificant that it cannot even be identified causes a major attack of panic. So what you are experiencing in my opinion is part of the anxiety/panic cycle.

Fear

Fear is similar to anxiety in that the emotional and physiological states are very similar experiences. One of the most common symptoms of anxiety is fear, which includes the fear of dying. You feel an intense fear when you think of dying, or you may think of it more often than normal, or can’t get it out of your mind. Students suffering from test anxiety may experience any of the following: the association of grades with personal worth, fear of embarrassment by a teacher, fear of alienation from parents or friends, time pressures, or feeling a loss of control. The fear of failing a task and being negatively evaluated for it can have a similarly negative effect on the adult. Although you may know you really have nothing to fear, your emotions seem to overpower your reason.

However, fear has come to imply a much wider range of feelings of anxiety and worry. They include: feelings of irritability, depression, guilt and hostility a tendency to introspection, self-criticism and negative thoughts excessive dependency on other people an inability to perform well in stressful situations such as examinations or interviews a susceptibility to phobias and irrational worry a tendency to psychosomatic illness and worries about health a decrease in one’s ability to function efficiently in life and to cope with everyday problems that’s causes anxiety

Conclusion

Another view is that anxiety is “a future-oriented mood state in which one is ready or prepared to attempt to cope with upcoming negative events”[3] suggesting that it is a distinction between future vs. This might indicate that anxiety is a protective mechanism designed to prevent the organism from engaging in potentially harmful behaviors. If you are one of these people, you will not need to be told that this excessive nervousness or social anxiety is completely unhelpful

I have two wonderful teenage children and I love them very much. Over the years, I’ve pondered how my panic attack and anxiety-generating genes would one day impact them. Yes, would my children struggle as I did? You know, isn’t it odd that as much as I had nothing to do with my genetic composition, I would feel any measure of guilt regarding the potential for passing my pathology to my children? Have you ever felt the same?

Well, let’s first determine if genetics is even an issue here. Research indicates panic disorder occurs five times more often in monozygotic (“identical”) twins of panic sufferers than dizygotic. Relatives of panic disorder sufferers have a 10% increased risk for the disorder. And a panic disorder sufferer has a 78% probability of having a family history of panic disorder. All of this translates into an estimated heritability as high as 40%. And let’s not forget that women are twice as likely to suffer from panic disorder. Yes, I have a daughter. So it appears as though genetics is a legitimate factor.

So what does that mean for my children? Well, that’s a good question. In spite of my history of some pretty nasty panic and anxiety they aren’t necessarily fated likewise. I mean, who really knows how the genetic cards were dealt. And let’s not forget my children weren’t raised within my familial environment. That’s a huge consideration. On the other hand, maybe they will follow in dad’s anxious footsteps. I suppose if I had tons of money to blow I could call upon genetic science to truly tell the tale, but I’m very content in accepting and dealing with what may come.

See, I believe in the power of insight, discretion, and well-considered action in dealing with such eventualities. In terms of insight I’m suggesting we make sure we understand, embrace, and manage our own panic and anxiety situation before endeavoring to help our children. What aid could we possibly offer if our own baggage isn’t checked? And should an anxiety issue befall our children the issue of insight must be impressed upon them. They need to come to know their own pathology, and who better to provide the introduction than us?

When I talk about discretion I’m emphasizing objectivity as we observe signs of atypical
1000
anxiety in our children. Given our desire to protect them from the hell we endured our observations may be subject to misinterpretation, overreaction, and catastrophe. Remember, we’re pretty good at those. We simply have to make sure we’re receiving and perceiving things as they truly are.

Finally, in mentioning well-considered action, which requires a good bit of discretion, I’m advocating really thinking through how we’ll approach our children with their genetic potential for pathological anxiety. Now, do I recommend providing advance notice? Not necessarily. That said, it’s something I gave my children with regard to my alcoholism and our familial prevalence of the disease. I felt it very much need-to-know information as they approached their teen years.

As it applies to panic and anxiety, I’m recommending “the talk” not take place until we’re darned sure legitimate signs of atypical anxiety are presenting. And well-considered action is an absolute must as we approach intervention strategy. A huge bit of caution here. Given our experience with panic and anxiety, we may consider ourselves the best possible counselor for our children. Not so. Please seek the assistance of a licensed professional and allow him/her to lead the charge. By the way, when we begin to implement our intervention strategy, what better time to have our children come to know their disorder? And how cool would it be to have them participate in their own treatment planning?

Oops. So what about the issue of guilt with which I opened? The truth of the matter is guilt won’t do my children, or me, an ounce of good. It’s really a very selfish and counterproductive emotion. And, anyway, it’s my problem, not theirs. Instead, it’s time to reach beyond Bill and replace this self-defeating demon with the power of open-mindedness and positive action. Only then can I realistically expect something better for my children, void of my personal experience and identity.
