Anxiety and stress are good for you! Well, experts maintain that short term stress and anxious moments like running for a bus and getting a lunch ready for your guests on time, can actually help us to strengthen our natural defenses which can protect us in the long term from Alzheimer’s, arthritis and even heart problems. Unfortunately, for most Americans who suffer from anxiety, the condition tends to be long term and gets worse all the time as it crushes its victims. There is help for anxiety available at all levels but still many cases go untreated. Even so, the cost of treating this condition comes to about 45 billion dollars a year.
The first help for anxiety is in trying to identify which type it is. There are many anxiety disorders. These can range from fear of open spaces (agoraphobia) to claustrophobia (fear of enclosed areas). Then there is a very common type which is known as social anxiety disorder which means that people are afraid of any social contact. After a traumatic event a person can suffer from nightmares and flashbacks as he or she relives the experience. This is known as PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Then there is the very common panic attack which is a severe form of anxiety where the person has alarming physical symptoms and fears that he is going to die.
Help for anxiety can take many forms. I know that some people can benefit from psychiatric help and counselling and also be treated with anti anxiety medications such as Xanax, Paxil and Zoloft. The medications can only serve as a temporary solution because many experts now maintain that people can become so dependent on these meds that they are condemned for the rest of their lives to a sort of shadowy existence where all thoughts, feelings and emotions are numbed. I know several people who fall into this category. The reason is of course that counselling and psychiatric help has not been followed or quite simply has failed.
The best help for an anxiety disorder is to understand the problem and then try to reduce the negative behaviours which plague the patient and replace these with positive images and behavior.
